Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that Iran has enough enriched uranium for multiple nuclear weapons.
During his visit to Greece, Gallant told his Greek counterpart Nikos Panagiotopoulos that Iran is not happy with just one nuclear bomb. In fact, it has already accumulated enough enriched uranium at the 20 percent and 60 percent levels for five.
"If Iran enriches to the 90 percent weaponized level, it would be a great error and the price would be heavy, and there would be consequences which could inflame the Middle East," Gallant said. As per the defense official, only top-level intelligence cooperation between Israel and Greece had prevented a possible disaster.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Tehran accumulated enough enriched uranium at a high but non-weaponized level for four nuclear weapons. Gallant’s statement made it clear that Tehran’s build-up of its potential nuclear arsenal continues as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl recently said Iran could weaponize uranium in less than two weeks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently told a congressional bipartisan delegation led by Rep. Michael Turner (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, that Iran could blackmail any American city if it acquired nuclear weapons.
"To have Iran being able to threaten every city in the United States with nuclear blackmail is a changing of history," Netanyahu said. "Iran is 50 North Koreas and not merely a neighborhood bully like the dynasty that rules North Korea."
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) earlier addressed the Knesset plenum, the supreme authoritative body of Israel’s unicameral legislature. He also spoke with Netanyahu about the dangers of a nuclear Iran.
Responding to the remarks of U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan about the Israeli occupation’s freedom to act against Iran’s nuclear program, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said Sullivan’s announcement "means that America was and still is responsible for all the terrorist attacks of the Zionist entity on Iranian people and nuclear facilities and it must bear the consequences of that."
Sullivan said in an address to the Washington Institute think tank on May 4, that the American government has made clear to Iran that it can never be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon. "As President [Joe] Biden has repeatedly reaffirmed, he will take the actions necessary to stand by this statement, including by recognizing Israel’s freedom of action," Sullivan said.
Iran has confirmed more than once that it has the technical ability to produce an atomic bomb, but has insisted that it does not intend to do so.
Meanwhile, former Israeli occupation Prime Minister Ehud Barak clearly acknowledged the fact that Israel possessed nuclear weapons. "Political parties in the West are deeply concerned about the possibility that, if the coup in Israel succeeds, a messianic dictatorship will be established in the heart of the Middle East with nuclear weapons in its possession," Barak tweeted back in April.
It can be recalled that the Israeli occupation challenged the United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolution 487 of June 1981, which required Tel Aviv to urgently submit all of its nuclear facilities to the safeguards of the IAEA.
On September 18, 2009, the IAEA issued a resolution calling on Israel to sign the "Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," as well as open its facilities to international inspection, though the occupation did not express any interest in the matter.
The UN General Assembly invited the Israeli occupation to become a treaty member in December 2009 following a resolution dubbed "Establishment of a Nuclear Weapon Free Zone in the Region of the Middle East." Though 167 countries voted in favor of the resolution, the Israeli occupation refused to acquiesce in it. Furthermore, Israel skipped the 2010 nuclear summit in Washington.
The First Committee of the UN General Assembly also ruled in October 2022 decision that Israel must destroy all its nuclear weapons and submit its nuclear facilities to the control of the IAEA.
