MADRID – Israel must fully withdraw from Lebanon, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said while announcing Madrid’s donation of €10 million to the Lebanese armed forces as part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Despite the ceasefire agreed between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Israeli forces remain in Lebanon, and attacks on Hezbollah have continued sporadically.
During an official tour of Lebanon and Syria, the minister said the Israeli army must completely withdraw from Lebanon, and the attacks in the country must stop.
Albares told the Lebanese president that Spain is firmly committed to its freedom, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity and expressed support for the Lebanese Armed Forces being able to operate in the Hezbollah-controlled south of the country. He said this would also benefit the security of Israelis living in the north.
As for tangible support, Spain will train the Lebanese military, and fresh funds will be used for military salary supplements, solar panels and the army’s logistical capacity, among other things.
He also noted that Spain will contribute another €10 million in cooperation aid this year and declared that Lebanon is a priority country for Madrid in promoting stability in the region. He recalls that in 2024, Spain increased its financial aid to Beirut by 60%.
Given the complex security situation in the region, Albares reiterated that the temporary ceasefire – which came into effect on 27 November – should be made "permanent" when it expires on 27 January.
Regarding the possibility of increasing Spain’s contribution to the UN’s Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the event of a permanent ceasefire, the minister said that no request had been received but expressed Madrid’s "absolute commitment" to this UN mission.
Spain has almost 700 soldiers out of a total of almost 10,700 from 49 nations.
