A young Boer I knew, Gilbert, told me of the time in the early 1990s when he served in the South African Army and was stationed in the townships. He described the tactics the Boers used to smash violent black crowds with a minimum loss of life.


[I've discovered another awesome German. He is Von Mellenthin. He was the most reliable guy who ever worked for Hermann Balck and he fought a lot too. He actually moved to South Africa and lived here for the rest of his life and did very well here. He wrote all his 3 books while he was living in Johannesburg where I live. I found this excerpt from one of his introductions to his books fascinating. Jan]

He wrote:
Computers and associated hardware, probability and statistics, and various techniques of operations research used in defense analysis have combined to obscure the fact that war, unlike mathematical models of war, is more an art than a science. Hence, so long as numbers and technology are not decisively mismatched, wars are dominated by the skill and character of commanders and staffs….
