A Massachusetts woman who stabbed to death her 8-year-old and 5-year-old sons as part of a voodoo ritual in February 2018, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder on Tuesday.

Latarsha Sanders killed her 8-year-old son Edson Brito and her 5-year-old son La’Son Brito and then mopped up the floor, placed them in their beds and covered them with bedsheets.

According to a police report, Sanders said she attacked Edson “because of the voodoo stuff.”

Her mother, Earline Sanders, told police that her daughter was “mentally unstable and crazy.” Assistant Plymouth District Attorney Jessica Kenny told the press that it had come out “wrong” with the first child, and that was the reason she had to move on to the second child.

“She said she stabbed him because she had ‘failed’ in the ritual,” Kenny said. “She responded to police that she felt bad about what she had done. She told police she mopped up the blood on the floor. She indicated she used a kitchen knife to stab both of them and left it in the sink. She also indicated she cleaned up both of the children and placed them in separate beds.”

The autopsies found that Edson had been stabbed nearly 80 times and La’Son had been stabbed more than 20 times.

Sanders was sentenced to mandatory life terms without the possibility of parole on both counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her two sons.

The jury deliberated for four hours on Tuesday, eventually finding Sanders guilty.

“Two little boys are gone forever. And nothing that we do here is going to change that,” Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said.

The Sanders killings came just one week after two sisters in the neighboring community of East Bridgewater, Mass., were charged with tying down, burning, and permanently disfiguring a 5-year-old girl, and threatening to cut off the head of her 8-year-old brother, in a Voodoo ritual.

The sisters were arrested by East Bridgewater police in 2018 after they performed what they described as a Haitian Voodoo ritual on their friend’s children.
