Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya rejects AfriForum’s appeal to President Ramaphosa from earlier this week
The Presidency has dismissed a call by AfriForum for President Cyril Ramaphosa to speak out against the ongoing use by Julius Malema of the chant “Kill the Boer! Kill the farmer!” At a rally on Human Rights Day on Friday the Economic Freedom Fighters leader once again led a crowd in this controversial chant. A clip of this incident was widely circulated on social media, including by Elon Musk, who described it as genocidal. In a post on X US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented that “’Kill the Boer’ is a chant that incites violence. South Africa’s leaders and politicians must take action to protect Afrikaner and other disfavored minorities.”
The AfriForum CEO, Kallie Kriel, sent a letter to President Ramaphosa on Tuesday urging him to take an “unapologetic stance” against such “hateful chants” and to “condemn it publicly in the strongest sense.” Netwerk24 reports that, in reply to queries, the President’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said that the matter had been dealt with in the courts, and suggested that AfriForum explore further legal remedies if it was dissatisfied. This was in reference to a recent Supreme Court of Appeal ruling that such chants, when directed against the white minority, did not constitute ‘hate speech.’
According to Netwerk24 Magwenya further stated that AfriForum’s loyalty lay with foreign leaders and countries which they visited to spread racist lies about South Africa. One day they are campaigning for sanctions against ANC leader, Magwenya noted, the next they are appealing to a President whom they treat with racist contempt. Magwenya added that recently released crime statistics proved that there are no mass murders of farmers in South Africa.
