South Africans are continuing to move to Israel despite the tensions in the regions, particularly since the 7 October attack by Hamas on the country.
According to statistics from the Israeli government, since the last Jewish new year 280 South Africans have moved to the country.
Since 1948, on average 323 South Africans moved to Israel every year. This average is skewed by a surge in the 1970s, when up to 1 000 South Africans were moving to Israel each year, in the aftermath of events such as the Soweto riots of 1976.
Anyone who can prove that they have at least one Jewish grandparent can move to Israel in a process known as Aliyah.
According to the Israeli government, there has been a significant increase in people wanting to make Aliyah from Western countries, particularly France and Canada.
