The African Union Commission chairperson Tuesday strongly condemned the Israeli forces’ violent attacks against worshipers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and bombing of the Gaza Strip, killing 28 Palestinians.
“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat strongly condemns the bombardments in the Gaza Strip that killed more than 21 Palestinians, and the violent attacks in the Al-Aqsa Mosque committed by Israeli security forces against Palestinian worshippers, wounding some 300 worshippers during the holy month of Ramadan,” read the AU Tuesday’s statement.
Mahamat reiterated the continued AU’s support for the Palestinian people in their “legitimate quest for an independent and sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
He also renewed a call for international efforts to provide “a just and lasting solution to the conflict, based on the existence of two states, Israel and Palestine, within the framework of the relevant African Union and United Nations pronouncements,” according to the statement.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Health Ministry said the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli raids rose to 28, including ten children and a woman. The number of injuries climbed to 152.
Israeli warplanes launched raids beginning late Monday in separate areas of the Gaza Strip in Operation Guardians of the Wall.
The Israeli army claimed that it had targeted 130 positions in Gaza, killing 15 members of the Hamas group in strikes.
The army said late Monday that it launched the Guardian of the Wall military operation to respond to, what it said, a rocket attack from the Gaza Strip.
Since the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Israeli authorities have harassed Palestinian worshippers and attacked them amid prayers inside Al-Aqsa Mosque in addition to threats to vacate dozens of Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem.
Tension spread from East Jerusalem to Gaza after Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza vowed to retaliate for Israeli assaults on Al-Aqsa and Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
