WW3: Can cutting Europe’s underwater Internet cables stop all European Internet? Answer: NO!

There are claims that due to sabotage that Europe’s internet can be stopped. This is not really true.

The Internet is designed to survive nuclear war. The Internet can automatically reroute traffic in any direction it needs. You can view the world’s undersea cable network here: https://www.submarinecablemap.com/

I counted at least 20 Internet cables between North America and Europe. If someone wants to cut off Europe or America from each other you have to cut most of the cables at the same time. This is virtually impossible. Even if you managed to cut all the cables you’d get internet traffic reaching Europe from Asia. There are Internet cables from the West Coast of the USA and it would reach Europe.

The more cables that are cut, the slower the Internet would be but you can’t stop it totally.

In total there are 500 undersea cables in the world and the vast majority of the Internet goes through them.

I checked and 1% of Europe’s internet comes to it via satellite.

I think for all practical purposes, Europe’s internet can be cut in multiple places and it would temporarily slow down the Internet, but it is extremely unlikely that Europe’s internet can be cut.

A place like Southern Africa is much more vulnerable. We have 5 internet cables.

The bottom line is that the vast majority of the world’s internet can’t really be cut easily and if it happens it can be fixed easily.
