Ezra Klein (born May 9, 1984) is an American progressive journalist, blogger, and political commentator who co-founded Vox, where he was editor-at-large.[1][2] As of January 2021, he became a columnist at The New York Times. He was previously an editor,[3] blogger, and columnist for The Washington Post and an associate editor of The American Prospect.[4] He has served as a contributor to Bloomberg News and MSNBC.

At The Washington Post, he managed a branded blog, Wonkblog, which featured his writing and the writing of other policy reporters. Issues discussed in the blog included health care and budget policy.[5] He wrote a primer on policy called Wonkbook, which was delivered by e-mail and on his blog each morning.

In January 2014, Klein left The Washington Post and co-founded Vox, a website for explanatory news owned by Vox Media.[6] He served as the editor-in-chief of Vox until September 2017, when he transitioned into his role as editor-at-large for Vox.[7] His debut book, Why We’re Polarized, was published in January 2020.

In November 2020, Klein announced he would be leaving Vox and joining The New York Times as a policy columnist and podcast host in January 2021.[8][9]

Early life and education
Klein was raised in a Jewish family[10] in Irvine, California.[11] His father, Abel Klein, is a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Irvine, originally from Brazil; his mother is an artist.[11][12] Klein attended University High School, where he was a poor student and graduated in 2002 with a 2.2 GPA.[12] After graduating from high school, Klein attended the University of California, Santa Cruz for two years before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles, from which he graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. While at UCSC, he applied to write for City on a Hill Press but was rejected.[13] He said school was never a great fit for him academically or socially.[14]
